There were eighteen cells total, sixteen for men and two for women. This photo, dated 1910, is from Mike Crane&#8217;s excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/youscurvyknave.com\/Sites\/Marion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ed1e24;\">collection\u00a0<\/span><\/a>of old Marion photos and postcards.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2169\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2169\" style=\"width: 318px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2169 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.spookymarion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/depuemurderheadline1.jpg\" alt=\"depuemurderheadline\" width=\"318\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.spookymarion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/depuemurderheadline1.jpg 318w, https:\/\/www.spookymarion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/depuemurderheadline1-159x300.jpg 159w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2169\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By the time the paper went to press, a mere two hours after the murder, a lynch mob was already forming outside the jail.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Unlike the old <span style=\"color: #ed1e24;\"><a title=\"Marion City Jail\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spookymarion.com\/?page_id=499\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ed1e24;\">Marion City Jail<\/span><\/a><\/span>, the Marion County Jail, which stood on North State Street from 1878 until 1968, doesn\u2019t have any supernatural stories associated with it. However, it played a role in a\u00a0violent\u00a0series of events that took place in Marion in October of 1881.<\/p>\n<p>On the afternoon of October 4<sup>th<\/sup>, 1881, Frank Foster, a well-known and well-liked livery man, stepped into Tim Kelley&#8217;s\u00a0grocery store to buy some tobacco. As he was paying, a man named Orrin DePue walked up behind him\u00a0and, without saying a word, shot him 4 times with a .32 caliber revolver. Foster died almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Some men who had been chatting at the back of the grocery store were able to disarm DePue, and police quickly arrived to arrest him. DePue was initially taken to the city jail but was later transferred to the more secure county jail. A secure building was necessary to protect DePue from an angry mob that was rapidly forming in Marion. Indeed, <em>The Marion Daily Star<\/em> reported that, \u201cMany threats are [being] made that the murderer will not remain long where he is, but it is hoped that mob law will not be resorted to in our law-abiding town.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2162\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2162\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2162 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.spookymarion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/marioncityjailturnkey.jpg\" alt=\"marioncityjailturnkey\" width=\"400\" height=\"680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.spookymarion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/marioncityjailturnkey.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.spookymarion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/marioncityjailturnkey-176x300.jpg 176w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2162\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shortly before the jail was demolished, an article appearing in <em>The Marion Star<\/em> stated, \u201cCommissioners plan to preserve the key which, long eyed by antique dealers, is said to be a fine representation of 19th Century iron work.\u201d According to Randy Winland&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marionhistory.com\/product\/postcard-history-series-marion-county\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ed1e24;\">book on Marion postcards<\/span><\/a>, the turnkey is currently on display at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marionhistory.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ed1e24;\">Marion County Historical Society<\/span><\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>DePue\u2019s motive was shooting Foster was never clear. Initially, DePue initially told police that Foster deserved to be shot because he had mistreated DePue\u2019s younger brother the previous fall. However, when a reporter from <em>The Marion Daily Star<\/em> interviewed DePue a day after the murder, he\u00a0said that he was drunk at the time and didn&#8217;t know why he had murdered Foster. (The reporter eventually gave up trying to sort out DePue&#8217;s motive and\u00a0noted, &#8220;Orrie talked very queer, and nothing\u00a0definite could be learned from him.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>The following night, on\u00a0October 5<sup>th<\/sup>, DePue hanged himself in his jail cell using a bed sheet. <em>The Marion\u00a0<\/em><em>Daily Star<\/em>\u00a0suggested\u00a0that DePue had \u00a0probably saved the county a great expense and that most everyone was satisfied with this outcome.<\/p>\n<p>In 1968, a new county jail was completed north of town, and the old county jail, which was already falling apart, was demolished.
